Crossing For A Cure HCI Student Involvement Press Release

Crossing For A Cure HCI Student Involvement

June 4, 2019 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Lake Worth, FLA: On Saturday June 15th HCI College will be present to provide care at the Crossing for a Cure championship race put on by Piper’s Angels Foundation, a non-profit organization in South Florida that aims to improve the lives of those living with Cystic Fibrosis.

Piper’s Angels Foundation, and subsequently Crossing for a Cure, were created when Travis Suit’s four-year-old daughter Piper was diagnosed with the terminal lung condition Cystic Fibrosis in 2011. Suit learned the ocean was known to have health benefits for those living with Cystic Fibrosis and in 2013 he and three friends paddled from the Bahamas to Palm Beach in order to raise awareness. This year over 225 competitors will be paddling from Bimini in the Bahamas to Lake Worth Beach in Florida, an exhausting journey that will be overseen by support boats on sea, and by HCI on the mainland.

HCI College, which specializes in programs for nurses, EMTs, and paramedics, will have a wellness tent set up along the finish point in order to provide care for those finishing the exhausting 80-mile journey. The tent will be equipped with rehabilitation chairs, ice packs, water, healthy snacks, first aid equipment, and nurses to oversee competitors’ recovery. They will also be giving away sunblock, hand sanitizer, first aid kits, and other helpful items to competitors and guests alike. This will be the first of hopefully many years that HCI College students will participate in this deeply meaningful and unifying event.
