Differences (and Similarities) Between ASN and BSN Degrees

ASN and BSN Degrees

You can become a nurse with either an ASN or a BSN degree. Both of these degrees prepare you for an entry-level career in nursing. There are a few key differences between these two nursing degrees, though.

A Few Key Differences

Length of time to complete
An ASN degree is an associates degree in nursing. The BSN program works toward a bachelors degree. The length of time to complete these degrees varies as a result. You have to take more classes to earn the BSN degree, and you are likely to finish sooner if you only earn the ASN degree. ASN degrees are often completed in as little as two years. BSN degrees, on the other hand, can take up to four years.

Level of care and career advancement
Nurses with an ASN can only provide basic nursing care to patients, while nurses with a BSN are licensed to perform more advanced nursing care. BSN nurses also have more advancement opportunities than nurses who only hold an ASN degree. With a BSN, nurses can qualify for more positions than ones who only hold an ASN degree.

But More Similarities

The degrees have more in common than they have different from each other. You can start your career as a nurse with either degree. So, if you want to become a nurse faster, then the ASN may be the way to go. It does not take as long to complete.

Choosing which degree to get might be a tough decision. It can also be an easy one. What are your career goals? How soon do you want to become a nurse? How long do you want to be in school before starting your career? Asking yourself these questions can help you to make a decision that is right for you.
